GONZÁLEZ Y SERRANO, Bartolomé

(b. 1564 Valladolid, d. 1627 Madrid)

Spanish painter. He spent his early years in Valladolid and Madrid. According to Palomino, he was trained with Patricio Cajés, but also important was the influence of Italian Mannerism at the court (1600-06) of Philip III in Valladolid. Knowledge of naturalistic works by such Italians as Orazio Borgianni, with their monumental forms and chiaroscuro, also determined González’s style, especially as a religious painter. González is first documented in 1606, after which he worked for the court in Burgos, Lerma, El Pardo and El Escorial. In 1608 he witnessed the will of the court portraitist, Pantoja de la Cruz, who died that year. González succeeded Pantoja de la Cruz in the completion of the royal portaits for the gallery of the palace of El Pardo, which replaced those destroyed by fire in 1604. One of his earliest known portraits is that of Margaret of Austria (1609; Madrid, Prado), which shows the influence of Pantoja de la Cruz.

She was Princess di Parpugnano in her own right from 1601, and daughter of Olympia Aldorandini, Princess di Rossano Calabro (1567-1623-37), and lived.

This portrait is supposed to represent Don Antonio de Moncada y Aragn, V Duque de Montalto who received the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece on 16 April 1607 from the Viceroy of Naples, the Marqus de Villena. It seems likely that the present portrait was commissioned from Gonzlez soon afterwards to commemorate the occasion.

This relatively early work reveals the significant influence exerted on the artist’s style by the work of the royal portraitist of the previous generation, Juan Pantoja de la Cruz.

This painting is characterised by a remarkable attention to detail, in particular in the rendering of the costume, and a smooth handling of the flesh tones, which are rendered with a pale tonality.

Gonzlez’s painting is a Spanish Caravaggesque work showing naturalism and a touch of sensuality. Without the barely noticeable halo and without the scroll the Saint could easily be taken for a resting shepherd with a sheep lying at his feet like a dog. The text on the scroll is a quotation from the Gospel of John: “Ecce Agnus Dei, qui tollit peccata mundi”.
