by HALLÉ, Noël, Oil on panel, 20 x 25 cm

Savoyards were a relatively common subject matter for eighteenth-century French artists. The natives of Savoy were often born into extremely impoverished circumstances and as a result many led itinerant lifestyles, trying to find work wherever they could. They were a recurring subject for Hall, along with artists including Jean-Antoine Watteau and Jean-Baptiste Greuze.

The painting was one of four genre scenes which Hall exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1761.
