As in England, the mid-18th century saw in North America a turn away from Roman classicism and a search for severer and purer forms. The founding structure of North American Neoclassicism is considered to be the Redwood Library in Newport. For the first time in North America a building was defined by the elegant fa�ade of a classical temple.
