Venus and Amor Mourning the Death of Adonis

The conception and detail of this painting were based on a print of 1606 by Antonio Tempesta. The unusual proportions of the canvas (its width is more than double its height) create a markedly horizontal effect. Since the painting was originally executed as an overmantel the format may have been chosen to suit its location.
