The Count of Comminges Recognizing Adélaide
by JACQUAND, Claudius, Oil on canvas, 163 x 208 cm
Realized in a gruesome greenish-yellow palette reminiscent of the hospital or the morgue, Jacquand’s Comminges depicted the count of that name slumped in despair over the expiring body of a fellow monk - actually his former lover Adelaide, who had entered his Trappist monastery to be near him after he had taken orders to escape his own torments of love.
