Capital

by MEDIEVAL SCULPTOR, Catalan, Stone

At the beginning the eleventh century, in the south of France and in Catalonia, there was a search for the technical means to solve the problem of adapting the surface motif used on panels (interlacings, palmettes and rosettes) to the rough-hewn surfaces of a capital. As a result, there appeared a series of capitals based on the Corinthian scheme which show the pre-Romanesque shallow relief giving way to chamfering and deep grooving. The capital with interlace pattern in Sant Pere de Roda is an example.
