The Old City Market, Warsaw, at Night
by PANKIEWICZ, Józef, Oil on canvas, 61 x 46 cm
In 1889, W³adys³aw Podkowiñski and Jzef Pankiewicz of the Warsaw College of Art visited Paris for the World Fair. There they encountered Impressionism, and, through Theo van Gogh, the paintings of Czanne. The exposition of their own work in Warsaw in 1890 signaled the beginning of Impressionism there.
Pankiewicz combined Impressionist and various Post-Impressionist approaches. In the 1890s he brought an equal intensity to sunlight and nighttime scenes with the light of city streetlamps.
