Stool cover

by RINGUET, Pierre, Gold and silver brocade on crimson ground, 71 x 92 cm

In 18th-century France, door curtains and carpets became mandatory domestic items. In 1730 the Lyon factory received a royal order for high-quality brocades - three crimson, one blue, one green, one pale yellow - to be used in the Garde-Meuble (furniture depository). Pieces from this royal order were also used at Versailles on beds and settees, and as screens. The public was allowed to visit the tapestry storeroom in the Garde-Meuble on Place Louis XV.

The picture shows a stool cover from the royal order.
