Poppies

by VONNOH, Robert William, Oil on canvas, 33 x 46 cm

Teaching in public or state art schools by artists associated with Impressionism was of central imporrtance in the American dissemination of the new art and its ideas. One of its early advocates was Robert Vonnoh, who taught at the Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia from 1891 on. His interpretation of Impressionism, in paintings such as Poppies, emphasized the intensity of colour to an extent that seemingly anticipates the Fauves in France or the German Expressionism.
