BOUTS, Dieric the Younger

(b. ~1448 Leuven, d. 1491 Leuven)

Netherlandish painter, elder son of Dieric Bouts the Elder (c. 1415-1475). He and his brother Aelbrecht (c. 145060-1549) continued their father’s style. Particularly popular were small devotional images of the Mater Dolorosa and Christ Crowned with Thorns. Nothing is known for certain by Dieric the Younger, but a fine altarpiece known as the Pearl of Brabant (Alte Pinakothek, Munich) has been attributed to him, as well as to his father.
