Goblet with cover
This cup, made by Adriaen de Groet, a goldsmith in ’s-Hertogenbosch, is a fine example of the silver showpieces by which in the 16th century town councils and guilds proclaimed their status. It was mainly intended for display, only on exceptional occasions did people drink from it. De Groet’s silver-gilt covered cup, with its well-proportioned shape and delicate decoration is executed in a purely Renaissance style.
This showpiece was made in ’s Hertogenbosch, probably commissioned by an important local organization.
