GUARDI, Andrea
Andrea Guardi (originally Andrea di Francesco da Firenze), Italian sculptor. He was active in Tuscany (Pisa, Piombino, Suvereto, Lari) and in Naples in the mid-fifteenth century.
His name and his fame are linked above all to the marble choir of the church of Santa Maria della Spina in Pisa, in 1462. This work was characterized by the panels showing Virtues in bas-relief, in which expressive ideas are mixed with a classical formalism. His style was influenced by Michelozzo and Antonio Federighi.
Among the many works attributed to Guardi is the tomb of Archbishop Pietro Ricci (Monumental Cemetery, Pisa), embellished by the reliefs with the Virtues, presumably made in his youth and today in the National Museum of San Matteo.
The Museo di Arte Sacra “Andrea Guardi” in Piombino houses some of his works.
