In the Orchard
by LA THANGUE, Henry Herbert, Oil on canvas, 83 x 72 cm
Henry Herbert La Thangue aimed at a presentation of the simple life led by honest country people. Deeply Romantic in attitude, he had favourite areas in England, Provence and Liguria which he painted in order to establish a pre-industrial image of Nature. His understanding of the natural world, as seen in his picture In the Orchard, painted in the open, might best be compared with that of Pissarro. Pissarro’s own art was communicated to the British not least by his son Lucien, resident in London since 1883.
