Royal Couple Mourning for their Dead Daughter
by LESSING, Karl Friedrich, Oil on canvas, 215 x 193 cm
The subject of this painting was probably taken from a work by the Romantic poet Ludwig Uhland, who was extremely popular among the Dsseldorf artists. This imaginary historical scene reflects a tendency to idealize the remote past that was connected with the beginnings of the movement for German national revival. Thanks to this topicality, Lessing’s painting achieved great success at the Berlin exhibition of 1830.
