LOMBARDI, Alfonso

(b. ~1487 Ferrara, d. 1537 Bologna)

Italian sculptor, active mainly in Bologna. His signed works include the Death of the Virgin (1522, Chiesa dell’Ospedale di Santa Maria della Vita, Bologna) and Stories from the Old Testament (San Petronio, Bologna). A Lamentation group in the Crypt of the Church of San Pietro, Bologna is attributed to him, He worked together with Michelangelo and Niccolò dell’Arca on the shrine of St Dominic (Arca di San Domenico) in San Petronio, Bologna. He produced many works in terracotta.

Death of the Virgin

The impact of Raphael on the artistic life of his time was such that sculptors introduced references to his work. Alfonso Lombardi, trained in clay modelling by following the footsteps of Emilian craftsman, sought to rediscover the breadth of The School of Athens in scenes framed by an uncompromisingly classical architecture, like in this scene in the church of Santa Maria della Vita, and others in San Domenico.
