LOOCKEMANS, Nicolaas

(b. 0 ?, d. 1673 Den Haag)

Dutch goldsmith. He was active in The Hague between 1648 and 1670. In 1667 he realized a covered goblet presented to Admiral Michiel de Ruyter for his successful raid on the English naval base at Chatham. Identical goblets were given to Cornelis de Witt, then representative of the Provincial States of Holland and Admiral Willem Joseph Ghent, second commander of the expedition.

This goblet was presented to Admiral Michiel de Ruyter during a banquet to honour the admiral for his daring and successful raid on the English naval base at Chatham, which was decisive in turning the tide of the Second Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-67 in the Republic’s favour.

Nicolaas Loockemans was a goldsmith in The Hague. The enamelling was probably assigned to an unidentified specialist.
