LUTTICHUIJS, Simon
(b. 1610 London, d. 1661 Amsterdam)
Dutch painter, brother of Isaac Luttichuijs. Born in London, the brothers soon moved to Amsterdam where they studied. Simon specialised in still-lifes, Isaac painted mainly portraits.
Simon Luttichuijs is known to have painted portraits, including those of Charles II of England and his family but all his identified surviving works are still-life compositions. Around the mid-1640s he painted a number of vanitas subjects in a somewhat monochromatic manner but in the late 1640s turned suddenly to still-lifes which are often placed against a dark background with a few strong colour accents.
