Bravo

Portraiture broadened considerably during the late Baroque period. An index of this can be seen in imaginary portraits, such as the remarkable series of bravi or desperadoes by Orazio Marinali, which are essays in anti-heroic ‘types’ of a kind that had been popular among Venetian painters in the circle of Giorgione. Though based upon a Classical format, the results vary from the menacing to the humorous.
