MAURER, Hubert

(b. 1738 Röttchen, d. 1818 Wien)

Austrian painter. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. From 1772 until about 1776, he was one of a group of artists provided with a pension. He was also one of the first Academy artists awarded a scholarship to Rome. He specialized in portraits and religious subjects.

From 1785 he taught at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts for 32 years, where his students included - among others - Moritz Michael Daffinger, Peter Fendi, Friedrich von Amerling, Johann Baptist von Lampi and Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller. The classes consisted mainly of drawing lessons.

Hubert Maurer was an Austrian painter, who was one of the first Academy artists awarded a scholarship to Rome. He became professor in 1785 at the school which offered elementary drawing tuition at the School of Painters in Vienna.

The painter submitted Odysseus and Circe for the Vienna Academy in 1785 as a reception piece.
