MENEGHELLO di Giovanni de' Canali

(b. 1363 ?, d. ~1427 Zadar)

Dalmatian/Italian painter. He is one of the best documented artists working in Zadar, whose name appears in about a hundred documents in the archives of the city. These documents, dated from 1385 to 1427, refer to specific commissions, many from private patrons, for a variety of artworks for a number of different churches. He designed also the tomb of the archbishop of the city, Nikola Matafar. As his name suggests, Meneghello originally hailed from Venice, where he probably trained before moving his workshop to Zadar. Apart from the large number of documents referring to his artistic commissions, little is known about him since none of his documented works survives.

However, he was he was convincingly identified with the artist named the Master of the Tkon Crucifix (who in turn is identified with the Master of Helsinus), thus a considerable oeuvre can be associated with Meneghello.

Altarpiece of the Virgin Mary

The main body of the altarpiece consists of five panels: a central panel of the Virgin and Child, flanked by two panels on either side, each of which is divided into two narrative scenes, one on top of the other. The four scenes to the left of the central image depict episodes from the story of Sts Joachim and Anna and the Birth of the Virgin. Those on the right relate two miracles of the Virgin associated with the celebration of the Feast of the Conception. A predella depicting Christ and the Apostles runs beneath the main scenes.

The altarpiece can be attributed to a Venetian-born artist working in Zadar. In the past it was attributed simply to the Venetian school. The names of Lorenzo Veneziano and Jacobello del Bonomo were mentioned in this connection. However, the work is now attributed to Meneghello di Giovanni de’ Canali.
