Salzburg Pericopes

This manuscript was executed in the St. Peter’s Monastery in Salzburg. The Abbey of St. Peter’s was founded by St. Rupert in the late 7th century. The oldest monastery in the German-language area, it retained its outstanding spiritual, intellectual and cultural role throughout the entire Middle Ages.

The miniature on folio 24v shows the infant Jesus being presented at the temple. On the right Simeon, the high priest and Hannah, the prophetess are represented, while on the left Mary is followed by Joseph with a brace of doves in his hands.
