The Singer Francisco d'Andrade as Don Giovanni
by SLEVOGT, Max, Oil on canvas, 210 x 170 cm
Max Slevogt was, quite literally, the most musical of the German proto-Expressionists. His dashing, theatrical canvases have a sense of personal, turbulent drama, of romantic sentiment restated in a more freewheeling technique. Responsive to the great musical heritage of Austria and Germany, Slevogt illustrated an edition of Mozart’s Magic Flute and portrayed Francisco d’Andrade in the title role of another of the composer’s great operas, Don Giovanni.
