Covered goblet
by LOOCKEMANS, Nicolaas, Gold and enamel, height 30 cm
This goblet was presented to Admiral Michiel de Ruyter during a banquet to honour the admiral for his daring and successful raid on the English naval base at Chatham, which was decisive in turning the tide of the Second Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-67 in the Republic’s favour.
Nicolaas Loockemans was a goldsmith in The Hague. The enamelling was probably assigned to an unidentified specialist.
